01

Why I Became a Cardiologist

My love of cardiology began at home. My father, Antonios Vrachatis, was an Interventional Cardiologist and, for many years, Director of Cardiology at G. Gennimatas General Hospital in Athens — he still practises cardiology. I watched his interactions with his patients, so my decision to become a doctor was no surprise. Cardiology won me over because it studies complex functions of the human body for which we now have highly effective diagnostic and therapeutic tools. It combines medical and surgical practice and calls for a balance between emotion, reason and decisiveness.

02

Studies & Academic Background

I graduated from the 8th High School of Nea Smyrni. After the national entrance examinations, I was admitted third in rank to the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, where I also completed my PhD. I hold an MSc in Health Care Management from the Hellenic Open University. I trained in cardiology at G. Gennimatas General Hospital in Athens and obtained specialist certification after national and European examinations (European Exam of Cardiology). I now serve as Assistant Professor of Biomedical Technology at the School of Medicine, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

03

Specialisation

I specialise in Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology. I undertook further training at the Humanitas Clinical and Research Center in Milan with a scholarship from the Hellenic Society of Cardiology. I am a member of the Cardioteam group and provide services at the Catheterisation, Electrophysiology and Pacing Laboratory of the Eugenideio Therapeutic Centre, as well as at my private clinic in Kallithea.
